commissioned art

I was asked by the owner, Gary Strack (the jolly man from the winter drawings post below) of the restaurant I work at if I could fill a chalk board wall. He gave me full creative freedom to do my thang. All he asked was that guests in the restaurant got an idea of where the food comes from. He wanted them to know the produce/meats comes from local sustainable farms. Gary gave me the list of farms and I drew them out on a map of Massachusetts. The picture above (though a bad one) is where my brain took it. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it. If you want to check out the other art work from some pretty amazing artists at Firebrand Saints, check out the site: http://firebrandsaints.com/

This next piece is for a girl I work with. She runs an independent floral design company/project. She's trying to get her website up and running and asked if I could draw the cover for her site. She wanted a simple outline drawing of a woman's face. She's going to take the drawing and design flowers around the piece before it goes up on the site, which I'll gladly post once finished. This is her facebook site until then: http://www.facebook.com/designbylaurajean.

Just wanted to post these previous drawings for my blog. I'm sure you've seen them. :)

The Studio

This is one throwing room in the studio. It's my fav cause it has a wall made entirely of windows. Gotta love that natural light. Mudflat is quite an amazing space. I'm pretty sure the building used to be a theatre. There's a majestic proscenium arch towards the back of the building that was possibly in a fire at some point. The frame looked charred, lots of character. Prettttty awesome.

This is a practice pot. Best I've thrown thus far.

Gooey Butter Cake

No one in Boston seems to know what gooey butter cake is. Everyone that I've let try this all-time favorite recipe it has had the same reaction and I quote, "this is heaven".

Yes, it certainly is.

Teapot

I started my wheel-throwing ceramics class today! Yea! And I definitely suck at wheel-throwing! Yea! It may have been a little ambitious to start an intermediate throwing class, since it's been about 7 years since I've been on a wheel. It's really the first time in my life that I feel comfortable being the worst student in the class. I couldn't be more excited to learn. I'll be sure to document my progress.

This is my first finished teapot from my handbuilding class (and kitty, of course). I built it from two pinch-pots molded together, then I added the base, lid, spout, and handle. I'm actually really happy with it. The lid broke prior to bisque-fire, which meant I had to made another with wet clay. The trick was anticipating how it would fit on the shrunken bone-dry base. Lucky for me, I guessed right. Fits like a glove!

Morgan

I had some time to kill yesterday while at Brandeis University, so I popped this sucker out in about a hour. This one looks the least like the person I was intending on drawing, but its kind of my favorite daily drawing so far. It's a rare treat to enjoy drawing eyes.

braden

This one was a struggle. It was doomed to look like a mug shot from the get-go. Bad photo selection on my part.

Carrie

This is the first of my daily sketches. And when I say daily, I probably mean every other day. Though the goal is everyday! I started this yesterday, worked on it for 20 min, then finished it today in another 20. All with a half stick of vine charcoal.

Joe

Meet Joe.

Meet Joe as a ceramic planter.

Joe is a fella from my handbuilding class at Mudflat. Joe is an expert in Celtic mythology. He tells tales of Irish folklore every Monday in a thick Irish accent. I asked him to be my model because I liked his teeth and the depths of his wrinkles.

Today, I made tasty-ass homemade oreos. I wouldn't mind doing it again sometime.

Because I live with three other sweet-toothed bitches, I only got one. The biggest one, of course. It's times like this I try and remind myself that baking wouldn't be any fun if I didn't share. :)
